Bacopa
Ayurvedic memory herb with a consistent but slow-acting signal
Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic herb (bacosides are the active compounds) studied for memory and learning. We grade Bacopa B- on evidence and B- for worth-it at about $10-20 per month.
Evidence
Worth it
Typical cost: $10-20/month
What it does
Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic herb (bacosides are the active compounds) studied for memory and learning. It modulates acetylcholine activity and has antioxidant effects in brain tissue. Effects take 8 to 12 weeks of daily use to appear.
What the research says
Improved memory acquisition and retention across multiple RCTs
Evidence: moderate. 300 mg/day standardized extract for 8-12+ weeks; 9-RCT meta-analysis and trials by Stough 2001, Roodenrys 2002, Morgan & Stevens 2010 all positive on memory outcomes
Attention and processing-speed effects are inconsistent
Evidence: weak. 2026 network meta-analysis (29 RCTs, 2,107 adults) found no significant effect on sustained or selective attention or processing speed; a 2025 RCT (n=101) was null on primary cognitive endpoints
Possible short-term anxiolytic and stress-buffering effects
Evidence: emerging. Calming effects reported within 2-3 weeks in some trials; secondary findings only, not an established indication
Consistent memory signal across RCTs and meta-analyses, but a recent null trial and a network meta-analysis narrow the claim to selected memory outcomes, not general cognition or attention. Effect sizes are modest and onset is slow.
Is it worth it?
Cheap and among the best-value cognitive herbs for memory specifically. Worth a 3-month trial at 300 mg/day; not a substitute for stimulants or attention-focused nootropics.
Typical cost
$10-20/month
Common form, not a brand recommendation
Dosage contextestablished
300 mg/day of extract standardized to roughly 20-30% bacosides, taken for 8-12 weeks or longer; effects fade if stopped.
Safety notes
Generally safe in trials; mild GI upset (nausea, stomach cramps) is the most common side effect, along with dry mouth and occasional fatigue. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to limited data.
