AKG (Alpha-Ketoglutarate)

One small aging trial made it famous. The replication has not arrived.

Alpha-ketoglutarate is a molecule involved in the Krebs cycle, the cell's energy production pathway. We grade AKG (Alpha-Ketoglutarate) C+ on evidence and C+ for worth-it at about $25-40 per month.

What it does

Alpha-ketoglutarate is a molecule involved in the Krebs cycle, the cell's energy production pathway. Levels decline with age, which sparked interest in supplementing it, usually as calcium AKG.

What the research says

  • May slow measures of biological aging

Evidence: emerging. One notable human trial reported reduced biological age markers with calcium AKG; small sample, needs replication. Needs verification.

  • Supports bone density in older adults

Evidence: emerging. Some trials in postmenopausal women suggest benefit; evidence base is small. Needs verification.

  • Associated with lower biological-age residual in one 2026 cross-sectional study

Evidence: emerging. Aging Cell (May 2026): 143 delayed-release CaAKG users averaged 1.8 years lower age residual vs non-users, significant after adjustment; the longitudinal slice (n=26) was not significant. Regular CaAKG showed an 8x smaller, insignificant effect. Observational, not causal.

DRAFT: best human signal is the 2026 Aging Cell cross-sectional association (1.8-yr lower age residual, n=143, observational); the earlier 42-person retrospective had no control group; the double-blind ABLE RCT is the one to watch. No longevity RCT readout exists.

Is it worth it?

C+

DRAFT: moderate cost against a thin evidence base; the worth-it case depends entirely on future replication.

Typical cost

$25-40/month

Common form, not a brand recommendation

Dosage contextemerging

1 g per day of calcium AKG was used in the notable human trial; no established long-term dosing.

Safety notes

Short-term use appears well tolerated in trials, but long-term safety data in healthy people is limited. Talk to your doctor before supplementing. This page is information, not medical advice.
