Astaxanthin

The red carotenoid with modest but consistent skin, eye, and lipid signals.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid antioxidant found in salmon, krill, and algae. We grade Astaxanthin C+ on evidence and C+ for worth-it at about $10-20 per month.

What it does

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid antioxidant found in salmon, krill, and algae. It accumulates in cell membranes where it quenches singlet oxygen and dampens inflammatory signaling, which is the proposed mechanism behind its skin, eye, and vascular effects.

What the research says

  • Improves skin elasticity and moisture, reduces UV-induced redness

Evidence: moderate. Pooled RCTs (4-12 mg/day for 8-16 weeks) show moderate, consistent gains in skin elasticity and hydration and reduced UV-induced erythema; wrinkle-depth effects are variable across studies.

  • Supports visual function and reduces eye fatigue

Evidence: emerging. RCTs in adults over 40 report improved visual acuity and accommodative function at 4-9 mg/day, plus one 30-day trial showing improved dry-eye symptoms; trials are small and short.

  • Modestly lowers triglycerides

Evidence: moderate. Pooled trial data show an average triglyceride drop of about 21 mg/dL in people with diabetes; no meaningful LDL change was found.

The skin and triglyceride signals replicate across small RCTs, which is more than most antioxidants can claim. But effects are modest, trials are short, and the famous '6,000x stronger than vitamin C' figure is a test-tube artifact with no bearing on human outcomes. No hard disease endpoints have moved.

Is it worth it?

C+

Evidence (C+) sits below the leaderboard floor, so the worth-it grade is capped at C+ however inexpensive it is. About $15 a month at a common dose. Derived from the October 2026 worth-it model.

Dosage contextemerging

Most trials use 4-12 mg/day taken with a fat-containing meal; 4-6 mg is a cautious starting point. No official recommended intake exists.

Safety notes

EFSA considers combined diet-plus-supplement intake up to 8 mg/day safe for adults. Trials used 4-12 mg/day for up to a year with good tolerability and no serious adverse events. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding (no safety data). Talk to a specialist first if taking immunosuppressants or hormone medications, and note possible overlap with 5-alpha-reductase drugs.
